From Office to Operations: Review Common Tasks to Increase Value and Discover Savings |
 |
It’s true. Time is money. Preparation and intentionality save both, but that takes commitment from an entire organization, which builds a culture. Tasks as common as installation of a Shaft Mount Reducer reveal the level of commitment to saving, so periodically reviewing basic operational procedures such as these prove quite valuable.
BEFORE INSTALLATION — Be Ready
Have a backup on hand or a supplier who stocks one for you.
Store it properly – in a dry environment, with the right lubrication, in the correct position.
Plan for pressure. There is real pressure to get operations going again when a Shaft Mount must be replaced. Promote safety and operational excellence by ensuring those who will be installing it under pressure understand the importance of taking their time to do it correctly. Rushed and careless installation is risky and costly.
DURING INSTALLATION — Be Precise
Have a backup on hand or a supplier who stocks one for you.
Have the right lubricants on hand in the right quantity for filling the Reducer to the right level.
Do not overtension the belts; overtensioned belts lead to bearing failure.
Ensure the breather is installed in the right location and breather cover has been removed. Proper guarding should be in place but not interfering with operation.
AFTER INSTALLATION — Be Attentive
Measure operating temperature of both the high-speed and low-speed shafts periodically.
Assess seals for leaks or damage.
Ensure breather remains properly vented. The unit stays cool when the breather is not covered or plugged.
Check unit regularly for physical misalignment or damage. Units in high-traffic areas risk being bumped or hit by other equipment and should be checked more frequently.
Listen for operational noise that might indicate damage, wear, or misalignment along any part of the drive package.
It can be equally valuable to review product options and evaluate past decisions that have created preferences but not savings. Is your standby brand an obstacle to meeting budgetary goals? In many cases, the difference between brands is an illusion. A bit of research and an open mind can mean tremendous savings now.
